Lilliput CHildcare

Education and Daycare for Infants and Toddlers

At Lilliput Preschool, we offer specialised daycare for infants and toddlers in a calm, responsive, and relationship-based setting. Our Pēpi area is carefully designed to support the wellbeing, learning, and unique rhythm of tamariki aged from six months to two years.

With small group sizes, consistent kaiako, and a home-like environment, we give your child the security and space they need to flourish.

Areas

Relationships and Environment

Our Pēpi area is peaceful, nurturing, and full of aroha. Relationships are at the heart of everything we do. Each tamaiti is cared for by a dedicated hoa ako who builds a strong bond based on trust, respect, and love.

We follow the natural rhythms of every child. Routines are never rushed. Care moments are slow, attentive, and full of meaning. This creates a sense of predictability and connection that supports healthy emotional development.

Our low kaiako-to-tamaiti ratios allow us to give every child the time and presence they deserve. These small numbers also foster strong relationships with whānau, creating a collaborative partnership that supports your child’s learning journey both at home and in the centre.

Our Teachers

Hoa ako and secure attachments

Every tamaiti is supported by a primary and secondary hoa ako (learning partner) who understands their routines, cues, preferences, and personality. This system is based on research showing that the first 1000 days of life are foundational for brain development and lifelong learning.

Through consistent care and familiar faces, tamariki develop secure attachments and a strong sense of self. Kaiako slow down during routine times, like nappy changes or feeding, to engage fully with each child. These everyday moments become the foundation for trust, language, and responsive communication.

Our Teachers

Qualified Kaiako and team consistency

Lilliput is proud to have an exceptional team of qualified kaiako. We consistently exceed the 80% trained teacher requirement.

Stable, passionate teachers support consistent routines, emotional safety, and genuine relationships with tamariki and whānau. Our centre is not just a place to work — it’s a supportive, respectful environment that feels like home.

Learning

Play based learning in the early years

At Lilliput, learning happens through play. Te Whāriki, New Zealand’s early childhood curriculum, guides our play-based philosophy. Tamariki explore, experiment, and engage in ways that suit their interests, personalities, and pace.

Our teachers thoughtfully create environments that invite curiosity, discovery, and joy. They sensitively join in play to stretch thinking, support communication, and build social skills — all while ensuring tamariki feel seen, heard, and valued.

Day Care

Freedom of movement

We believe tamariki learn best when they can move freely and naturally. That’s why we avoid equipment that restricts movement, like high chairs or walkers. Babies are never propped in positions they cannot reach on their own.

If a child is not yet able to sit independently, they will be sat with a kaiako during meals. Every movement, gesture, and exploration is treated as part of their learning journey.

In the sleep room, each child has their own cot or mattress to foster a sense of comfort and belonging. Kaiako gently follow your child’s usual sleep routines, offering cuddles, soothing music, and calm reassurance. Tamariki are checked regularly and always sleep under the care of someone who knows them well.

Portfolios

Whānau communication and Daily Care

We know how important it is for whānau to feel informed, supported, and involved. That’s why we provide multiple ways to stay connected with your tamaiti’s day. From notifications through our Home app, to sharing face-to-face updates at drop-off and pick-up. You’re always welcome to call or message our Pēpi team during the day.

Every tamaiti also has a personal portfolio filled with learning stories that reflect their development, interests, and achievements. You’re encouraged to take it home, share it with whānau, and contribute your own stories. Our online portal makes it easy for extended family to follow along, add comments, and feel part of your child’s learning journey.

Learning

Early communication and connection

We support every tamaiti to feel heard, understood, and confident in their communication.

Baby sign language is part of our daily practice and used alongside spoken words. Common signs like more, finished, help, and drink give pēpi a voice before they can speak. This builds confidence, reduces frustration, and strengthens emotional bonds.

Every moment is seen as a chance for learning and connection. Whether it’s a cuddle before sleep or a shared moment during play, our kaiako are fully present with your tamaiti. We honour the small things, because they are often the most important.
